July '08: Ty’r Cymry Our New Home
Owen John Thomas, former AM for South Wales Central and Chair of Ty’r Cymry House Committee hands over
the keys for the Credit Union’s rooms in Ty’r Cymry to Alan Jobbins, a founder member of the Plaid Cymru
Credit Union.
In 1936 Mr Llewelyn Williams, a Vale of Glamorgan farmer made of gift of Ty’r Cymry, which is in Roath
as a meeting place and a work place for organisations, societies, groups of people who are promoting Welsh
and its interests. Today, it is in the hands of trustees.
Ty’r Cymry was the home of Ysgol Sadwrn Gymraeg Caerdydd from 1943 to 1947. This action led to the
establishment of similar schools throughout Glamorgan and Gwent.
Over the years, Ty’r Cymry has been home to a number of institutions, including National Union of Teachers
of Wales [UCAC], the Welsh Evangelical Church, Yr Urdd, Parliament for Wales Campaign, Celtic League [Wales
Branch], Welsh Nursery Schools Movement [MYM], the Movement for Christion Education Wales, Menter Caerdydd.
Groups presently using rooms in Ty’r Cymry include a Welsh Nursery Schools group, a Welsh learners class,
Cymdeithas Ty’r Cymry, a cultural society, Plaid Cymru [Central Cardiff], and Cymdeithas yr Iaith.
As from 22nd July 2008, our new address will be UCPCCU, Ty’r Cymry, 11 Heol Gordon, Cardiff, CF24 3AJ. We will
open on a Tuesday and Friday from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Our new telephone number be 029 2049 1888. Our website
and email addresses will remain the same.
